DAF or Private Foundation? A Quick Way to Tell

October 05, 2026

A question I hear often from clients who are serious about giving is whether they should open a donor-advised fund or start a private foundation. Most people assume it's one or the other. In practice, it usually comes down to what matters most to you.

Do you want full control over how and when gifts go out? Do you want to involve your family in the giving itself, not just the decision to give? Would you rather give anonymously, or are you comfortable having your name attached to a grant? Each of these vehicles answers those questions a little differently, and the right fit depends on your own priorities more than any general rule.

There's a simple checklist I like to use with clients who are weighing this decision. It walks through thirteen questions covering giving style, family involvement, and the fees and mechanics behind each option, so you can see where you land before we ever sit down to talk it through.

Neither option is better in the abstract. What works well for one family's giving can be the wrong fit for another. If you'd like to go through the checklist together, or just want to talk through what you're hoping to accomplish with your giving, I'm always happy to make time for that conversation.
